November 23rd, 2003 Against Everyday InhumanityThe Union for the Reconstruction of Romania - URR is deems as intolerable the condition of children who are exploited through beggary or improper work to their age. It is inhuman and undignified for a civilized society to tolerate as a common phenomenon the psychic and physical abuse of children sent out to beg, sometimes tortured in order to inspire pity, often fiercely beaten unless they "earn" enough.
The Union for the Reconstruction of Romania - URR is sustaining the internment in institutions that care for the children who are forced to beg, either by their families or by other "entrepreneurs" that end up "owing" them. Therefore, we sustain the internment of all street children; in the civilized world, even if there are people with no shelter, children are not left to the fate's will, so that their future would built but upon crimes and drugs.
The legislation needs to be altered so that harsher punishments should be given to those that exploit their children, either natural parents or not, and for all those that are psychically or physically abusing them. Likewise, the procedures of decaying these abusive parents from their parental rights should be simplified, even if enough precautions should be kept in order to prevent abuses.
We think that the nightmare life thousands of people live under our eyes on the street means an obvious failure of the entire society in supporting the weak and the helpless. Especially it means a total failure of the state institutions that should sanction children exploitation and the failure of the caring institutions that leave too much to the non-governmental organizations.
