March 02nd, 2004 For the eradication of censorship
The Union for the Reconstruction of Romania (URR) supports Romania Think Tank's request that Nastase government demand payment of all debts of private media companies to the state budget, as a proof of respecting its pledge to improve the conditions of mass-media freedom in Romania. It is a necessary decision for eradication of the censorship and self-censorship which can be seen now in many media institutions, mostly TV channels, in detriment of the political opposition.
We also consider that all charges that can be made against journalist according to the current legislation shouldn't have a penal nature, and that the damages that a journalist found guilty of calumny must pay should take into account his income.
We support the regulation by law of the use of public money in advertising by public institutions. It is utterly absurd to pay lots of money from the public budget, which means from our pockets, to find out from the newspapers the train timetable.
